Rethymno Cultural Summer: must-see spectacles for July & August 2014

With the summer season at its very peak, Crete and Rethymno Town flourish with inspirational cultural and artistic events that are of great interest to both the native and the foreign visitors. Each summer, the Office of Culture of the Municipality of Rethymno collects piece by piece each cultural proposal in order to enrich the holiday of its guests in the most enlightening way…

In this article we suggest a selection of events that will fill your minds and hearts with a combination of sentiments, sounds, pictures and symbols depicting the authentic Cretan soul in every neighborhood of the county of Rethymno. Hundreds of artists both at the forefront and behind the scenes give their best self in order for you to enjoy the best spectacles…! Here below are listed some of the best cultural events for the months of July and August 2014.

Watch the Lysistrata by Aristophanes for two nights on the 16th & 17th of July at the Fortezza Castle.  On the 20th of July you may like to take your children at the theatrical play of ‘The beauty and the beast’ at Erofili theater in Fortezza Castle. For a musical evening, watch the Evenos String Quartet on the 22nd of July at the Ιmbraim Han mosque, which unites the different schools and cultures of each of the four musicians – members of the quartet in a uniform expression through musical language.

On the 28th of July, the impressive Greek singer Georgios Dalaras sings the best Greek songs that will touch the heart of both native and foreign guests. Another children play will be presented on the 3rd of August at the Fortezza Castle – ‘the little Mermaid’ by Hans Christian Andersen -. On the 5th of August you may find interesting to watch “The Persians” by Aeschylus at the Erofili Theater of the Fortezza Castle. For two nights on the 8th & 9th of August you can watch and participate at the Cretan folk dancing that will take place at the Fortezza Castle.  The Fortezza will also be hosting yet another ancient drama, that of ‘The Trojan Women’ by Euripides starring many famous Greek actors.

The music artist Ilias Palioudakis will take us to a magical journey though his music and wander with us in musical paths from Crete to Vardaris for a unique musical night on the 22nd of August at the Fortezza Castle… Because music embraces all the people of the word! Last but not least, do not miss the spectacular concert tribute to the two greatest Greek musicians – Mikis Theodorakis and Manos Hatzidakis – on the 25th of August at the Fortezza.
