Rethymno is the third largest city in Crete and, without the merest doubt, it constitutes a holiday heaven of the Mediterranean basin boasting a varied tourist infrastructure, numerous attractions and plentiful sandy beaches. Apparently, its multiple conquerors over the centuries had consecutively fallen in love with its ambience and this is why they all dedicated to it elaborate monuments, buildings, temples and other admirable specimens of unique beauty that will convey you to a past epoch.

It is especially during the summer months that the city of Rethymno presents guests with a string of interesting events and festivals. A place which has always been the cultural heart of the island awaits to enchant tourists even further alongside their sea and sand holiday!

The Cretan Diet Festival 2014 will certainly attract you attention of you fnd yourself in Rethymno between the 27th of June and the 5th of July. The festival is a major cultural and commercial event not only for Rethymno but for the whole of Crete and each year it is further enriched with new activities and participations by local producers. People from all over the island come to discover the Cretan gastronomy at the Municipal Garden of Rethymno and it is a very interesting event for tourists and locals alike.
On the 6th of July you may be interested at attending the Royal Symphonic Band of the Belgian Guides concert. 84 carefully selected musicians make up a fantastic orchestra which was initially created in 1832. Get ready for some splendid melodies inspired by Belgian music.
On July 12th you are invited at the Classical Music Concert by the Greek musical group Antologia Lirica Ensemble consisting of distinguished opera singers and string, woodwind and piano top soloists. This year their program is devoted to the 400 years since the death of El Greco (1614) and masterpieces from the Renaissance and Baroque epochs will be presented.(Monteverdi, Corelli, Vivaldi, Mudarra, Marais, Handel, Kornaros etc).

To the delight of all wine lovers, the town of Rethymno organizes the wine festival every summer at the end of July at the central park. Visit the festival and taste as many local wines as possible practically for free. Apart from wine tasting, you will have the opportunity to see local and international music performances with plenty of folk dancing till the morning hours!
The 27th Rethymnon Renaissance Festival 2014 has been cancelled. Unfortunately there will be no Renaissance Festival this August.
On the 5th of September you can experience the M.O.T.He trio (music of the heart). A tribute to the world of atmospheric jazz, ethnic, funk and Greek improvisational rhythms. A concert of European rock and folk elements.
Last but not least, Rethymno welcomes Greece’s leading roots reggae band “One Drop Forward” on their first visit presenting their work at the Venetian Castle of Fortezza on the 7th of September.
